Nicole & Jeromey | Wedding Photography | Vintage Beach

It could have been anywhere. White sandy beach, sparkling blue water, bright summer sun, your perfect tropical island. But it wasn't just anywhere, it was Aotearoa in all her beauty!

And what an absolutely perfect spot for Nicole and Jeromey's wedding.

Jeromey, together with his friends and family, stayed in a bach overlooking the beach. In the morning they walked down to the beach and prepared a perfect spot for the ceremony. Vintage inspired material flags lined the aisle, leading up to the altar that had, quite possibly, one of the best backdrops ever - Langs Beach. So after all was set up, what better way to spend the morning than taking a cool dip in the ocean.

The girls spent a laughter-filled morning getting ready at a beautiful old homestead, that fit in with the wedding perfectly. The bridesmaids wore gorgeous modern vintage dresses in soft pinks and whites, finished off with super pretty necklaces and ever so cute headbands. Nicole looked fabulous! Her dress was stunning, and also in keeping with the vintage-pretty theme wore a pearl necklace and bracelet and a delicate diamanté headband… and the shoes, well, they were just fantastic! As a surprise for Nicole, Jeromey sent over a magnificent bunch of colourful flowers with a special note just for her, bringing a tear to the eye of many in the room!

Arriving in style in two 1970's Buicks, Nicole walked down the beach towards the ocean, towards her friends and family, and most importantly towards Jeromey. Their gorgeous son Taydon, wearing matching attire to the groomsmen, also shared in this special moment. He happily wandered around Mum and Dad, eventually finding the best spot to watch the ceremony from, Dad's arms!

The bridal party went further down the beach for the location shoot and keeping it fun and relaxed, Nicole and Jeromey had a great time. What a beautiful spot to have a few cool drinks, enjoy the sunshine and celebrate with your best friends!

Vintage napkins with Nicole and Jeromey's initials in the corner, love heart biscuits, floating paper decorations, hydrangea flowers and a sweets table, the Waipu Hall was all things pretty and vintage. So rejoining the guests, Nicole and Jeromey continued the laughs and celebrations of what was an absolutely beautiful day.

Mikey & Beks | Tauranga Wedding

Taming of the Shrew.

Now anyone who knows Beks, knows that she is not by any stretch of the imagination a shrew. But in many ways it was on the stage of this Shakespearian play, where their story began.

It was high school.

Enter Beks. A beautiful young woman, graceful and kind catches the eye of Mikey, confident and fun. And so, between the two lead roles, a little spark of romance blossomed. But alas, soon after it began, the curtain on their relationship was drawn. Or so they thought.

Years pass and our two lead characters go their different ways. Despite many attempts from our leading man to woo back his love, it proved unsuccessful (akin to the play itself).

Change set. Sydney.

Mutual friends and chance meetings . It was here that their relationship once again began to grow. Fast forward a few scenes, enter a ring. A proposal. An engagement. And now, a wedding!

Change set. Tauranga. Present day.

Beks and Mikey's wedding was filled with emotion and a history shared from the heart. It was genuine and true, like their love. Beks was an absolute picture of elegance and grace. Her dress, hair and make up only further accentuating her natural beauty. A true leading lady.

Personal and touching gifts were shared in the morning, a reflection of the love shared between Mikey, his family and closest friends. Down to the fine details and subtleties, hand crafted bow ties with tailored shirts, waistcoat and pants, Mikey not only looked the part, but was undoubtedly our leading man.

In the cellar at Mills Reef Winery in Tauranga, beneath an exquisite handmade archway adorned with flowing fabric and lace, Mikey and Beks vowed their love and devotion to each other in a heart felt and emotional ceremony. Mikey & Beks remained at the winery for their location shoot, with the large wine vats and cellar providing unique opportunities for photographs, that were also sheltered from the rain. Perfect.

After delicious food, fine wine, more laughs and love, the lights were dimmed. The stage (the dance floor) was cleared. Enter Mikey and Beks. Husband and wife. All eyes were on our leading couple

The script of their future yet to be written, but with friends and family at their side, this will most certainly will unfold to be a great story.

So for something a bit different this year, Dave has put together a little home video from our family Christmas and holiday. As with most Christmases, we headed down to Tauranga for a few days to spend with both our families, shared presents, meals and plenty of laughs and love!

Euan & Lisa | Auckland Wedding Photography

One of my first distinct memories of Lisa, is of her wearing a beautiful dress, running, down a very steep driveway, backwards..

In heels!

On that same day I also got to know Euan a little more. He was a groomsman at his brother Rhys' wedding.
That was just over a year ago. And now I have had the privilege to also photograph Euan and Lisa's wedding.

And what a fun and relaxed wedding day. Euan and Lisa were just happy to be. To be marrying the one they love. To be with their friends and family. To be in every moment of their special day.

Lisa and the bridesmaids had a pretty chilled time together getting ready in the morning. Wearing matching slippers they painted each others nails, had their hair and make up done, wrote kind words to be shared later in the evening, laughed and just enjoyed each others company. Lisa looked fabulous. Hair and make-up done perfectly, while her beautiful wedding dress with ruching details highlighted her gorgeous petite figure. But most lovely of all was her beaming smile.

Standing at the alter of the chapel at Wilson Home in Takapuna, Euan and the boys looked very smart. When Euan saw Lisa walking up the isle, the love and excitement was evident. Emotion welling in his eyes as his bride to be made her way to his side. Swoon.

After the ceremony the bridal party walked through the beautiful grounds where we started the first of the location photographs. Ivy covered arch ways and pretty gardens with fountains made for a cute photo backdrop.

With being so close to the waterfront we also headed down to the Devonport wharf. There was a beautiful hazy view of Auckland city and a nice little patch of beach for us. Off came the heels and with sand under their feet, the bridal party was having loads of fun. Even ferry passengers and passers by stopped to admire the beautiful couple.

And in perfect timing, just as we had finishing the location photographs, the rain that had been threatening all day, finally arrived. Enter cute photographs under the umbrella. Perfect.

So now, another distinct memory I have, is of Lisa wearing a beautiful dress, running, across a wet parking lot, huddled under an umbrella with her now husband, as she starts her married life...

Jacqui & Scott | Auckland Wedding Photograhy | Modern Vintage

No matter what the weather, it was always going to be a beautiful day.

And that is was.

With the effortless beauty of vintage and modern elements throughout the wedding details, everything was picture perfect. Including the bridal couple.

Jacqui looked like an absolute princess. She looked perfect in her wedding dress that was brilliantly made by her mum and Scott looked very smart in his classic black suit. What a good looking couple, no wonder they have such a cute kid!

Jacqui and Scott decided to have the location photos before the ceremony, which worked out perfectly
as they could spend the rest of the day celebrating with their friends and family.

To keep that special moment of when the groom sees his beautiful bride for the first time, we did the first look at the gorgeous venue of Mantells in Mt Eden. Scott waiting by the fire place with his back turned (as not to see Jacqui walk in), Jacqui walking across the courtyard then tapping her handsome groom on the shoulder. And then, that moment when they first see each other.

Bliss.

Once Jacqui and Scott had some time together, we brought in the bridal party and what a better place for photographs than at Mantells. Will, Jacqui and Scott’s little son, also came for some photos. And he looked too cute in his little tuxedo. Gorgeous!

Though the weather had been gray and drizzly, that in no way was going to dampen the mood of the day. So with umbrellas in hand we headed up Mt Eden for some sweeping outdoor photographs. The timing was perfect as we had a little pocket of sun shine before the rain started again.

The intimate and personal ceremony was held under the marquee at Mantells. As Jacqui walked up the isle, Will caught sight of Mum and was not going to miss out on all the action. So for the remainder of the ceremony he happily pottered around up the front with Jacqui and Scott.

Followed by drinks, a divine dinner and some good laughs with the speeches, the tables were cleared to make way for the dance floor. And so with their closest friends and family Jacqui and Scott partied and danced the night away.

Jacqui and Scott, you guys were awesome to photograph and we had such a fun time, thank you so much for letting us be a part of your beautiful day xox

Friday the 13th | A very lucky day

Also know as friggatriskaidekaphobia (insert dramatic doom doom), for some, Friday the 13th would be a very unlucky day. However..

Six years ago, throwing any friggatriskaidekaphobia aside, on Friday 13th 2006, I married my best friend. And is has been one amazing adventure ever since!

From the shores of the Pacific..

..Asia..

..and Africa.

From mountain tops in Hawaii..

..to big city streets..

.. to small townships.

From early morning teas (not that many early mornings for me)..

.. to late night parties (that's more me).

There is something special about a Bride on her wedding day. Yes with her hair and make up done and adorning a beautiful dress, she looks gorgeous.

But, I think it is more than that. Surrounded by her friends and family, and marrying the love of her life seems to bring a special radiance. A glow that is unique to a Bride on her wedding day.

And Hannah was glowing! Her hair and make up was stunning and in her dress she looked perfect! And she was marrying her love, Matt.

The girls got ready at the family home on the North Shore, and the boys at Spencer on Byron in Takapuna. The ceremony was held in the beautiful old St Luke’s Anglican Church in Mt Albert. It was a lovely personal service with both Grandmother and Father officiating at different times during the ceremony.

With both Matt and Hannah being from the North Shore we headed to Cheltenham Beach in Devonport for the photographs. It was a gorgeous day with a stunning view of Rangitoto Island in the background. We then headed up Northhead over looking Auckland Harbour and also had some photographs at the old tunnels.

Before heading to the reception at Duders, Matt and Hannah wanted to get a few shots on the wharf at Devonport. Another great location showing off Auckland’s beautiful harbour.

Matt and Hannah you are a beautiful couple, and your wedding was just as lovely. Thanks so much for the opportunity to photograph your day! x

Johnny & Sarah | Couple's Photography Blenheim

Long gone are my dreams of Dave coming home after a hard day’s work, walking in the door and being welcomed by smell of fresh home baking. Not to mention being able to whip up some delicious muffins when we have guests over. My baking is marginal at best and usually ends in tears (mine and Dave’s), sorry Dave. ;)

Sarah on the other hand is quite talented when it comes to whipping up tasty home baked treats. Not only that, but her and Johnny are some of the most hospitable and generous people we know... Throughout this year they kindly opened their home to us, and made us feel so welcome and loved. They also kept up regular home baking and Sarah even made a birthday cake for Dave! Nice.

So to show our appreciation, we did not make them a thank-you cupcake basket or a three tier cake masterpiece. We did however offer to do a couple’s photography shoot for them...

On a windy and threatening-to-rain summer afternoon, we headed out to the Wither Hills in Blenheim. All the trees were in full bloom and the long spring grass was looking divine. The perfect spot for some photographs. Despite the wind, Johnny and Sarah were fantastic models and we had such a fun afternoon out in the hills.

So you guys, we wanted to say that we think you are an amazing couple, thank you so much for all you have done for us this year and we can’t wait to hang out with you more in Auckland! :)

Lily’s Memorial | Hamilton Family Photography

As you may have seen from previous blogs, sadly Dave’s Grandmother, in South Africa passed away recently. Unfortunately we weren’t able to attend Lily’s service in South Africa, so we held a memorial service for her here with the family in New Zealand.

It was a special time together, remembering and celebrating a Mother, a Grandmother, a life well lived. We gathered at a family friends in Hamilton for the service, then headed down to the Waikato river were we placed flowers (lilies) in the river.

We followed this by sharing a brunch together, with more laughs and love.

One thing I love about photographing kids is one, they are super cute and two, they come up with the best facial expressions.

Holly and Wayne’s sweet little boys Cohen and Haddon were no exception. See Cohen’s fun series of three black and white photographs, all taken within a few seconds of each other. And Haddon’s little baby rolls were just too cute!

As it was raining we started with some family portraits in the house.. But once the rain stopped we headed outside for a family walk and we also got some great candid photographs of the family, just being a family.

Thanks Wayne and Holly for a fun afternoon, I had a great time with you and your gorgeous wee lads.

Katy Perry Tribute | Event Photography Hamilton

We would be the first people to admit that Katy Perry doesn’t really frequent our playlist.

However...

We had a fantastic night out at the Katy Perry Tribute Show in Hamilton on the weekend. Replicating the 2011 concerts, the set, costume and lighting design was awesome and of course, brilliant singing and dancing. The show was performed by ‘Nikki Monroe’ (aka our very talented younger sister) and her live band, The Monroes.

As part of the promotion for the show they gifted some tickets to the Child Cancer Foundation. Needless to say all the kids there had an amazing time, especially those who needed a treat! Here is an excerpt from a thank you they received the next day..

“This was a show where Cancer was left at the door and one of the worlds most popular contemporary entertainers was channeled to a crowd of eager, enthusiastic and excited fans by a brilliant performer who put her all into delivering a stunning performance... For a couple of hours everyone in the room was transported to a special place, away from hospitals and doctors surgeries and worrying times. A place where they could let go and have fun, relax and be normal again.”

Rach & Wayne | Couple's Portrait Photography

Rach and Wayne decided on a near by subdivision lot for their portrait photography shoot. A great backdrop with an open paddock that even had an old original farm shed on it. But as I soon found out, this old farm shed may not have been so old and out of use as I originally thought...

How do I know this? Well firstly, the electric fence was on, and yes I got a nice wee shock from it. That got plenty of laughs (thanks Dave).

Secondly, half way through our shoot, focused on the fantastic couple in front of me.. I wasn’t looking were I was stepping. Now if you grew up in the country as I did, you will know what I mean when I say that my foot met an unfortunately familiar crunch, slip, then soggy squelch. My little white shoes with blue flowers were now a cow poo green. Nice. However it was pretty hilarious, and glad that I could provide some light entertainment! And you will be pleased to know that an over night soak in NapiSan, restored my shoes to their former glory.

Now Wayne has some pretty fancy moves. Dance moves that is. He and Rach are quite the pair when it comes to Ceroc dancing, so he was keen to bust out some moves during the shoot..

We had heaps of fun on our photography shoot. Rach and Wayne you are a great couple. You clearly just love being together and enjoying each others company.. and I look forward to you teaching us some of that fancy foot work! :)

Marlborough Farmers Market

When in Blenheim we have become regulars at the Marlborough Farmers Market that is held every Sunday morning. Now it is a pretty small market, but what it lacks in size it makes up in tasty goodness..

We usually start with a Soy Chai Latte for me and a Latte for Dave, accompanied by a fresh pastry with chocolate in the middle. Perfect.

Then with coffee and pastry in hand we peruse all the fresh, locally grown produce..

Don’t mind if I do.. Some of the tasty preserves, chutneys jams and preserves by A Taste of Yesteryear. Probably one of my favourites, the Kasundi.

So once we have been around the stalls, listened to some live music and done our share of taking in the atmosphere.. We head home to enjoy the rest of our recent purchases.

So if you are in Marlborough on a Sunday, go check it out. Highly recommended by us!

Debs & Dave | Self Portraits

So we are very excited with our new purchase.. Canon’s sweet L-series 50mm f/1.2. This lens on the Canon 5D Mark II is a super sexy combo.. With it’s really low aperture it produces some stunning images. Within a first few shots we were hooked and think this is going to be our favourite ‘child’.

So we took the opportunity to try it out with some self-portrait photography.. These were taken in our living room, facing a large soft light source (double corner windows) and f/1.2 on a tripod. Sweet.

This is the start of what I think will be a very long and happy relationship. Thanks Canon.

Wade & Erica | Auckland

Wade and Erica are one those of those couples that casually go about the work of changing the world one food parcel, community lunch and water tank at a time. Having already gone with them to photograph one of their trips to Vanuatu where they built a water tank for a local community, we have seen first hand their passion for changing both local and global communities for the good.

So where to photograph for the couples shoot..?

With the majority of their work in New Zealand being in the city and with the homeless, an urban scene was the perfect back drop. Wade had a few places in mind that we could do the shoot.. With no shortage of funky graffiti art we settled on Maidstone Street in Grey Lynn.

So in keeping with the urban theme we also headed to Myers Park in Auckland City centre. Erica looked super cute in her blue dress against the old concrete steps and Wade was rocking the jandals and jeans look. We even had a few randoms stopping to chat with us, making the shoot all the more fun!

You guys are inspiring! Keep up the awesome work!

We met Amy & Daniel in 2009 while we were both overseas doing photography and volunteer work, so it was a real privilege to photograph their wedding back home in Whangarei, New Zealand. The day started out rainy, but the weather cleared to a blue sky- a stunning backdrop for the beach and wharf.

As a special a unique touch Daniel, a floral designer, created Amy’s intricate wedding bouquet as well as the bridal party button holes and corsages. They looked fantastic!

We had a great day photographing Rebecca and Ray’s wedding the other weekend. They chose the amazing backdrop of Auckland’s west coast for their wedding, with the ceremony outside overlooking Huia Bay and reception in the old Huia hall.

Somewhat rainy and drizzly all day, but that didn’t dampen spirits at all.. And the umbrella made for some great shots! Rebecca looked gorgeous in her vintage inspired dress made by her twin sister, and the bouquets of hydrangea flowers looked fantastic with the bridesmaid’s blue dresses.

Along with shooting around the area, Ray and Rebecca also had the great idea of getting an ice-cream as part of the wedding shoot. So on the day we headed down to the diary and to enjoy a tasty treat!

Baby Portraits - New Zealand

The other weekend some friends and I had the opportunity to volunteer at a home for at-risk young mum’s here in New Zealand. Our aim was to treat the mum’s and give them some girlie pampering they otherwise would not have. I also spent the afternoon taking photographs of the mum’s and their gorgeous wee babies.. capturing this special time so they can treasure the memoires for years to come. For privacy reasons I have only uploaded the photos where faces are not identifiable. Enjoy!

We photographed Rhys and Joy’s wedding in Auckland in June and was a very special day with family and friends. The bridesmaid’s dresses were inspired by the lumberjack pattern, and were a fun and unique look on the wedding day. The grooms men’s also looked stylish in their chequered shirts and skinny black ties.

We photographed the bridal party at the Auckland Domain, outside the Museum. With it’s grand steps and old wooden doors it was a striking backdrop for this beautiful couple.

Joy had the idea of using red balloons as part of the wedding photography and they looked great on the day, a sweet and whimsical touch to the day.

The other week I headed up to the stunning Omaha Beach north of Auckland, to photograph an architecturally designed house. Beautifully designed with perfect open indoor outdoor flow, this house was both stunning and practical for a young family. Such a fantastic home to photograph!

Landscape Photography: Antarctica

Dave had the amazing opportunity to photography down at Scott Base, Antarctica. He was able to get some photographs of the stunning landscape from both the ground and from the air. Once back we were able to process the photographs in much more manageable temperatures!
